Dated 1880 S. T. Suit 1 Quart Tanware Whiskey Jug

Circa 1880: Standing only 7.5" tall and potted in Southwestern Pennsylvania, this attractive tanware Maryland merchant jug is stenciled " S.T. Suit. / Suitland, MD. / Little Brown Jug / The whiskey in this jug / was made in 1869 / and jugged by me / 1880." The delightful inscription, the small one quart size, and the fact that only a handful of different tanware merchant jugs were produced make this a desirable piece of 19th century advertising stoneware at an affordable price. Condition is excellent with typical minor wear around spout lip and bottom rim and no other chips, cracks, or repairs.
