Large 11" Antique American Taconic Swing-Handled BasketCirca 1850-1880, West Taghkanic, New York OriginWe recently acquired three outstanding Taconic baskets from a Virginia estate, and, at just over 11" in diameter and 8" in height (12" with handle extended), this is the largest of the trio. Like our other two 19th century New York baskets, this example is made from mixed woods and has double rim lashings that form a series of X's around the rim, thus squarely attributing it to the Taconic region in Columbia County, New York. One thing that makes this basket unique is the use of thin lashings on the bottom quarter of the basket. These lashings serve both to strengthen and beautify this large basket. The condition is excellent with only one minute and almost undectable loss on the inside center of the basket which is wholly unnoticable from the outside and causes no structural damage whatsoever to the basket. This fine antique Antique American basket will serve as a fine addition to any collection of antique country primitives or early American antiques.
