Antique Advertising Hunt Club Shoes Tin Sign
Wingo, Ellett & Crump Shoe Company | Manchester, Virginia
Signed The Meek Company |
Coshocton, Ohio
Circa 1905-1909: Measuring 24" by 30", this early 20th century Hunt Club Shoes sign sports a romantic scene of a well-to-do couple out for an afternoon horse ride on their grand Victorian villa. In the foreground of the scene is perched top of the line patent leather shoe. The Wingo, Ellett, and Crump Shoe Company of Richmond and Manchester, Virginia, was at its height in the first decade of the 20th century and had their signs made by The Meek Company in Coshocton, Ohio, which was long our nation's prominent manufacturing center for advertising signs from all over the United States and worlwide. Jasper Meek had been in the advertising business in Coshocton since the 1880s, when he began making advertising for Cantwell Shoes, a local shoe store, and ran The Meek Company from 1905 to 1909. This is a wonderful signed example of antique American advertising made by one of its early pioneers.
