By all accounts, Zimmerman was a kind and considerate gentleman; and it follows that many of his pieces are meant to charm the ladies. These three sewing caddies certainly fit the bill. Notice the squirrel’s velvet acorn-shaped pincushion, the waving girl’s heart-shaped tray, the mare and her foal walking up to their watering trough. Wanda Duncan owns an outstanding Zimmerman squirrel one-drawer sewing caddy complete with bobbins and a slot in the squirrel’s head for scissors. When Wanda showed us the piece, she was grinning from ear to ear, still as smitten with the sewing caddy as she was the day her grandfather let her take it home.
