8" Columbia County New York Taconic Swing-Handled BasketCirca 1850-1880Columbia County New York is the origin of some of the finest American baskets made in the 19th century, and this 6" tall (9 1/2" with handle extended) by 8" diameter Taconic swing-handled basket is a testament to the supreme quality of mid 19th century baskets made by the German immigrants from this region. In fact, Taconic swing-handled baskets were so well made that Robert Shaw, in his wonderful book American Baskets (Clarkson Potter/Publishers 2000) admits "some experts speculate that the Shakers found it more convenient to buy the swing-handled baskets made by Taconic artisans than to try to improve upon them." The use of mixed woods and the X-shaped double lashings around the rim confirm the Taconic attributuion of this fabulous museum quality antique American basket. Even the most advanced collector will be thrilled with this wonderful basket.
