1 Quart 5 Striper with Dot Stoneware Canning Jar

Circa 1870-1890: Stoneware collectors love decorated one quart wax sealers, and this petite 6.5" barrel form canner with five stripes and a blue dot for good measure is an interesting and attractively decorated example of the 19th century utilitarian stoneware canners manufactured in Southwestern Pennsylvania commonly used to store fruits and vegetables for year round consumption. This striper is superb nearly as fired condition with only very minimal expected wear on the inside rim and sholder groove and no other chips, cracks, or repairs. The field is decorated top to bottom with five freehand stripes and a cobalt dot that more than likely was dripped onto the jar by a hasty painter. This gives the jar an unexpected whimsical flair, and we think of it as a happy accident that shows the speed at which the decorators worked to get their vessels ready for the kiln.
